  4.               A Ruby D. Begonia Christmas Greeting

  7.      'Twas the night before Christmas and Ruby was stirring.
  8. Del was drinking the orange juice the grandbaby had left out for
  9. Santa so he should ward off a cold. She ate the fudge, too. 
  10.      "What are you doing?" she asked as Ruby typed madly. 
  11.      "Stirring stuff," said Ruby, finishing up an e-mail message
  12. to Kent Ballard. 
  13.      "Why?" asked Del. 
  14.      "It's what I do," said Ruby. 
  15.      "I thought you were going to work for the government so you
  16. could vacation full-time and get paid," said Del. 
  17.      "They quit doing that," said Ruby. 
  18.      "Hiring?" asked Del. 
  19.      "Paying for no work," said Ruby. 
  20.      "What now?" asked Del. 
  21.      "I'm thinkin' I can go to jail and collect social security,
  22. but do I want to go to jail is a problem. I mean, bein' virtual an'
  23. all means I ain't got to stay, but if people like Son of Sam was
  24. collectin' while in jail then surely I can find a way to beat this
  25. system without having to get locked up. The people makin' these 
  26. payments can't be too smart if they're sending checks to crazed 
  27. killers what's already on the public dole via incarcer... 
  28. confine... uh, people what's locked up, can they?" 
  29.      "I don't know, Ruby," said Del. "Some of that stuff's just so
  30. outrageous I can't believe even God isn't offended by the stupidity
  31. and waste," said Del. 
  32.      "I thought he was, and blaming the Democrats for it. Ain't he
  33. the other part of that threesome with Newt and Rush?" asked Ruby.
  34.      "No, Ruby. Rush and Newt just *think* that," said Del. 
  35.      "I think there might just be some people what's a tad confused
  36. about it, too," said Ruby. 
  37.      "Well, what do you expect in a world where Tonya Harding gets
  38. married in a sheet?" asked Del. 
  39.      "Selective justice?" asked Ruby. 
  40.      Del tipped her glass at Ruby. "I'm O.J.-ing my way out of that
  41. one," she said.
